Public Transportation in Hamburg

A single ticket from the airport or the main train stations should be 3,10 € ("Grossbereich"). Ticket machines are located on all train stations and accept cash, debit cards, and credit cards. You can also pay the bus driver (they have change for small bills).
Coming by Train
- From Hamburg Altona station (or Hamburg main station) take the S-Bahn (local train) line S1 or S11 (direction Blankenese/Wedel) to Othmarschen station.
- At Othmarschen exit the station toward the back of the train. Take the metro bus line 1 (all directions except Altona) to the main entrance of DESY (bus stop Zum Hünengrab/DESY).
Flying from the US, United has a direct connection to Hamburg (HAM) from New York Newark (EWR). Otherwise, most major European hubs (e.g. Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London, Munich, Paris) have frequent connections to Hamburg.
- From Hamburg airport take the S-Bahn (local train) line S1 (direction Blankenese/Wedel) to Othmarschen station.
- At Othmarschen exit the station toward the back of the train. Take the metro bus line 1 (all directions except Altona) to the main entrance of DESY (bus stop Zum Hünengrab/DESY). Total travel time from the airport by public transportation is about 1h.
- You can also take a taxi from the airport. Travel time is approx. 40+/-10 min. Cost is about 35 €.
Accomodation
DESY Hostel
The most convenient option for accomodation is the DESY hostel located on the DESY campus. Cost is 28 € per night excluding breakfast. We have pre-reserved 60 rooms (which are held until the registration deadline).

You might be able to get a lower rate if you call and explicitly ask for a discount for visiting DESY. - To stay closer to downtown, you can find several inexpensive hotels in the Hamburg Altona area (about 30min by public transportation to DESY).
