In this talk, the past, the present and the future of the PAL-XFEL project in Pohang (Korea) will be presented. PAL-XFEL lased for the first time on 14 June 2016 for a radiation wavelength of 0.5 nm. On 27 November 2016, the machine generated X-ray pulses for 0.144 nm wavelength. The performance and features of the machine, including the world-best time jitter of 20 fs, will be discussed. Besides the standard SASE operation, we are now ready to provide self-seeded light for a radiation wavelength of 0.15 nm. Moreover, in the near future we will construct one more undulator line at the hard X-ray undulator hall to generate isolated terawatt-attosecond X-ray pulses. The talk will also show the first studies on the application of artificial intelligence in the operation of PAL-XFEL.
