Analysis Centre: Monthly meeting

Europe/Berlin
Minutes, Analysis Centre meeting, 19 October 2009 ======================================== 1. PRC report and "Perspektivbericht" for midterm evaluation ----------------------------------------------------------------------- - Concerning the PRC report and talk, Thomas received much material, help and comments from many colleagues in the Analysis Centre - thanks! Status 10 November 2009: The PRC took place on November 5-6, and concerning the Analysis Centre it was quite successful, resulting in PRC committee recommendations which will be along the following lines (not yet finally formulated): "The Analysis Centre ... plays an important role in stimulating cooperation between analysis groups in Germany. The promising road taken should be followed further and possibilities for closer collaboration with institutes are to be explored. The indispensable support by DESY for the Analysis Centre must be complemented by the collaborating institutes." - "Perspektivbericht": The initial draft of the "Perspektivbericht" was not accepted by the editorial team, and a new draft was drawn up by P. Maettig and M. Kraemer, with empty spaces for specifics of the Analysis Centre that were filled in by Thomas and M. Kraemer during the MB meeting in Bonn on October 16. Hannes and others complain that the schedule for putting the document together was inacceptably tight. It was decided to send th elatest draft version around immediately after this meeting and to accept comments until Wednesday November 21. A few colleagues used this opportunity to comment. Status 10 November 2009: The report was handed in to the HGF. Now the midterm evaluation (30 November / 1 December) has to prepared (posters!). 2. A flyer / leaflet is being designed, and will be circulated and discussed in the Analysis Centre. It should be ready by Middle of December. 5. Schools and workshops ------------------------------------- - PDF school 20-23 October: about 30 participants, so far good feedback seen. Some criticism to the exercises: Too much execution-only of pre-defined code - would be better to leave more time for playing around with the code. Has to be considered for future events. - Statistics school 12-14 October (Karlsruhe): about 40 participants, good feedback (Thomas has not yet seen feedback --> will come). - Combined MarieCurie + Alliance Geant4 workshops end of January and March --> currently being set up. 6. AOB ---------- - PDF group: Trying to put together initiative for exp. from LHC and HERA and theorists for best input to PDF fits. - CERN is trying to set up an Analysis Centre - no details know so far. - Next meeting: 16 November, chaired by Zoltan. - It is suggested by members of the Analysis Centre that the management, especially the Project Board, should show more presence in the Analysis Centre meetings.
