Basics  course, providing a round-trip through statistical methods and treatments used in data analyses in HEP

Roger Barlow, Olaf Behnke, Glen Cowan, Louis Lyons

  • Maximum Likelihood and Chi2 Parameter Estimation
  • Introduction to R
  • Hypothesis testing
  • Frequentist and Bayesian Probabilities
  • Systematics
  • Searches and Discoveries

We have decided to have only ~two 45 minutes lectures a day + ample discussion time, because we feel that this is an appropriate format for online lectures.

The lectures and discussions will be chaired/moderated by one of the organisers. Please feel welcome to write during the lectures questions to the zoom chat box. For asking questions at the end of the lecture please use the 'raise hand' utility in zoom and wait until the chair invites you to ask the question(s).

Useful additional materials:

https://indico.desy.de/indico/event/4489/contribution/4/0/material/slides/0.pdf    Lecture from Volker Blobel on data combination including a dicussion how one can average two measurements with a common normalisation uncertainty using a constraint fit Ansatz, see p.36 ff
