Brian Reville, Galactic sources of very high energy particles

The next generation of VHE gamma-ray observatories, such as CTA and LHAASO, will reveal the 100 TeV sky in unprecedented detail. It is anticipated that this will reveal the sources of the Galaxies most extreme accelerators, specifically the long-sought after PeVatrons required to account for the knee in the cosmic-ray spectrum. I will review the current theoretical understanding of the role of supernova remnants in this picture. I will also discuss how high-power pulsars in star-forming regions are likely to be an important, and perhaps even dominant sub-set of 100 TeV gamma-ray sources.
