Description

The interest in counter streaming collisionless instabilities in plasmas has been greatly rejuvenated over the past two decades by novel concepts in laboratory and astrophysical plasmas. After reviewing their potential role in cosmic rays’ acceleration, gamma ray bursts, fast radio bursts or nuclear fusion, we shall focus on the unstable spectrum of electromagnetic waves growing within relativistic, unmagnetized, and uniform electron beam-plasma systems. Although the goal is to provide a unified picture of all instability classes at play, emphasis is put on the potentially dominant waves propagating obliquely to the beam direction, which have received little attention over the years. The concept of modes hierarchy will be developed, allowing to understand which dominant unstable mode shapes the linear phase of the unstable system.
