Andrew Taylor, New Observations Probing Particle Acceleration in GRB Outflows

Europe/Berlin
Description

GRBs have long been motivated as promising ultra high energy cosmic ray sources. Despite this promise, however, underlying questions about the magnetic fields in their outflows has strongly limited our understanding about their acceleration capacity. This situation has finally changed in last few years following the first successful detection of GRBs in the very high energy gamma-ray band. GRB emission in this band has long been proposed as a second spectral signature of GRBs, accompanying their already well probed synchrotron spectral signature at lower energies, anticipated to offer direct insights in the magnetic field strength in the GRB outflow. Focusing on two recent GRB detections by HESS, the most recent of which probed the energy spectrum by more than an order of magnitude in energy, the question as to the magnetic field GRB outflows will be discussed.
