Research Publishing Masterclass

By Marialuisa Aliotta

The prospect of writing a research paper from scratch can be daunting for young and senior researchers alike. Easing the process requires proper planning and an understanding of the overall publishing process. As part of the Career Events organised for this Conference, we are offering a two-session Research Publishing Masterclass open to anyone who is in the process of writing (or planning to write) a manuscript for publication on a scientific journal.

The class will teach you how to plan your paper, starting from identifying your paper’s key message and selecting the right target journal, to preparing a structured layout and crafting purposeful figures. Broader aspects of the submission, revision and publication process will also be presented.

The sessions are meant to be interactive and will give you an opportunity to engage with specific tasks drawn from the topics covered. Participants will be expected to submit brief excerpts of their work, which may be selected for class-wide discussion and feedback. No previous experience in scientific writing is required to take part in the Masterclass.

Participants should bring along a couple of published papers in their discipline that they will have read and understood before coming to the class. These papers must not be their own.

The Research Publishing Masterclass will be delivered by Prof Marialuisa Aliotta, a research-active academic and teaching-award winner, with extensive experience in academic writing and publishing, and author of Mastering Academic Writing in the Sciences: A Step-by-Step Guide (CRC Press, Taylor & Francis). As a keen mentor to early-career researchers, Marialuisa also coaches and consults on various aspects of academic life through tailor-made mentoring programs, workshops and online courses.
