Data Science Lecture: Container

by Christoph Wissing (CMS (CMS Fachgruppe DAQ, SW, Computing))

Europe/Berlin
Description

The usage of containers has become very popular in many areas of computing. They are used by developers to control the environment and in production by scale-able web applications. Most of well known services that we use everyday employ actually containers in the back. Due to the popularity of this technology containers have become also more and more popular in realm of scientific computing.

In the lecture we are going to discuss the technology behind containers and understand the differences between Virtual Machines and containers. We will take a look at two container ecosystems, that are presently most relevant in the typical scientific environment of your branches research: Docker and Singularity. We will have a hands-on session at the end to play around with a few (rather simple) examples.

Below there is a small document that describes the setup of the hands-on VM.

This event is part of a series of lectures and tutorials on data science topics hosted by the Platform for Challenges in Data Science in the excellence cluster "Quantum Universe" between DESY and Universität Hamburg. It is intended specifically for the PhD students in the cluster but younger and more senior members are of course also welcome.
