Reach Goals Together: Leadership beyond Hierarchy (virtual)

Content:

Do you have to rely on the cooperation of others to reach your goals? Would your work stand to benefit from reliable collaboration? If you are in a position in which you cannot rely on hierarchical leadership and need to coordinate the efforts of others, need their input to meet your goals or mentor Master’s or PhD students without an official leadership position, you will benefit from learning about lateral leadership. Lateral leadership is about leading beyond the power of hierarchy. In this workshop, we will explore the tools lateral leaders can employ: trust, communication, and (yes) power. You will apply these directly to your professional situation, in hands-on exercises. You will learn from the other workshop participants in peer work. We will practice communicative techniques and analyse which sources of power you can rely on. You will learn how to give feedback and analyse conflict and learn how to communicate expectations and delegate. The two sessions of this workshop are one week apart, giving you the opportunity to come back with new questions. After the workshop, you will have reflected your position and have a much clearer sense of how you can use leadership skills in that position.

Target group:

Lateral leadership responsibility is traditionally carried out by project leaders who work on a project together with colleagues from the own o other departments. An understanding of their lateral leadership position is also needed by those who only provide technical guidance but do not have any disciplinary responsibility which is often the case in the science system. Lateral leadership responsibility is also implemented by employees who are dependent on the cooperation of others without being able to oblige them to do so - as this is the case, for example, with change agents in staff units.
