Workshop outline: Career Orientation for PhD Students (8 sessions)

Dates: 17. October - 16. December 2022, each Monday 3:30-6:00 pm (8 sessions, individual coaching sessions during the final week 13.-16. December)

Session 1 October 17th, 3:30 - 6:00 pm 
Discover what you want in work (2.5 hours), self-analysis for career orientation
What future organizations look like?

o Choosing the next (career) step starts with knowing yourself: what are your values and the
themes that are important to you in life and work?

o What are the skills (technical and “soft or human”) you’ve developed during your studies and
your work as a PhD student?

o How to really work towards a job you love?
In this session, we will explore these questions to find out what is in your wheelhouse. By
consciously and actively engaging with these themes, you will find out what it is you really want.

 

Session 2 October 24th, 3:30 - 6:00 pm
Networking (2.5 hours)

o How can networking be useful to either choose the next step in your career or to find a job?
o How to build a network?
o What to say to these people?
In this session, you will work on how you can expand and manage your professional network, meet
people online and offline, in order to move forward with the next step in your career.

 

Session 3 October 31st, 3:30 - 6:00 pm
Professional social media network: the basics + start working on your own profile (2.5 hours)

o What are LinkedIn, Xing or ResearchGate and what exactly can they be used for?
o What do recruiters focus on when looking for candidates on these professional social networks?
In this session, you will learn how to build a strong profile and how to develop your contacts.
Nowadays, a strong online presence is essential, the sooner you start using these networks, the
easier it will be to use them when searching for a job.

 

(three week break)

 

Session 4 November 21st, 3:30 - 6:00 pm
CV and writing your cover letter (2.5 hours)
o Did you know that expectations of what should be in a CV and a letter of motivation and
even the way they look can be very different from one culture to another?

o How to showcase your capacities in a CV?
o How to capture an employer’s attention convincingly and originally in a letter of motivation?
In this session, we will discuss the how and what for successful applications. You will work on
composing a CV that allows you to present your experience and qualities authentically. You will also
discover how you can think outside of the box to make your letter personal, intelligent, and honest,
creating a link between what the employers seek and what you have to offer in a way that makes
you stand out in the crowd.

 

Session 5 week November 28th December 2nd to be defined
Mentoring in pairs (2 hours/pair)
In this session, you will work with another fellow student and the career coach and together we will
fine tune one or several aspects of the previous sessions.

 

Session 6 – November 5th, 3:30 - 6:00 pm
Ace your job interview (2.5 hours)

o What is your motivation? What are your core competencies and what are the gaps and why?
o What can you tell and not tell about yourself?
o What can your nonverbal communication convey about who you are?
In this session, you will challenge yourself, in a safe setting with your fellow students and
the career coach. You will do some role-playing and will receive feedback and tips that should let
you engage in your interviews with confidence. You will also learn about “assessment centers and
try a standard exercise from an assessment center.

 

Session 7 December 12th, 2022, 3:30 - 6:00 pm
Producing an Action Plan to better Achieve your Career Goals (2.5 hours)
o How to get organized so that your efforts are effectively and efficiently directed?
o How to organize and prioritize your tasks?
In this session, we will explore several models and insights from the field of time management. We
will distinguish between urgent and important tasks and practice a specific method. We will also
examine which style of working is best for you, so that you may enjoy all its benefits and are able to
avoid (many of) the pitfalls.

 

Session 8 week December 13th - 16th, to be defined
Individual Coaching (1 hour /person)

This coaching session will be tailored around your specific needs
