Abstract: The genus expansion of topological string theory is a factorially divergent series, and is expected to have non-perturbative instanton corrections in the string coupling constant. These corrections control in particular the large order behavior of perturbation theory. In this talk I will first review the connection between instantons and large order behavior, and then I will show how to use the holomorphic anomaly equations to calculate multi-instanton amplitudes in topological string theory. It turns out that these amplitudes can be written in closed form and have a structure very similar to eigenvalue tunneling in matrix models. Based on these results one can obtain a general picture for the resurgent structure of the topological string. I will illustrate the results with examples of toric as well as compact Calabi-Yau manifolds.
