The Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO) will be the first ground-based gamma-ray observatory open to the worldwide physics community. The CTAO will consist of up to 100 telescopes at two sites, one in Paranal (Chile), and one in La Palma (Spain). The CTAO sites will contain up to 100 telescopes, supplemented by auxiliary instrumentation for environmental monitoring and array calibration purposes.
The CTAO Computing infrastructure will provide all necessary means for the efficient submission of observation proposals, scheduling and execution of observations, and the handling of the several Gb/s of data generated. Moreover, the CTAO computing system will process all the datasets and hand them over to the scientific community - reducing the several Petabyte data acquired yearly orders of magnitude down to a manageable volume suitable for the researchers. Science data management operations will be coordinated from the CTAO Science Data Management Centre (SDMC) in the DESY Campus in Zeuthen.
This contribution describes the challenges, architecture, design principles, state-of-the-art technologies, and development status of the CTAO computing system.
