Description

The Young Crystallographers are a working group within the German Society for Crystallography (DGK). For 10 years, we meet regularly in autumn at different universities or the STOE facilities.

These meetings specifically aim to provide a platform for networking and scientific exchange for young scientists with an interest in crystallography, as well as to establish contacts with industry and research institutions.
We want to give young scientists the opportunity to gain early experience in scientific presentation in a relaxed atmosphere and without the stress of a larger conference.

For our grand anniversary, we are happy to meet at the DESY facilities! We are working hard to allow you deep insights as well as a great overview of the possibilities at this large-scale facility.

During the 3-day meeting, you will

  • present your own work as a poster (A0 portrait) and  lightning talk (~5 min.)
  • have the DESY campus tour
  • participate in an experiment and get a hands-on experience at a beamline of your choice at PETRA III (see The Experiments)
  • hear academic talks from senior scientists
  • hear industry talks from our sponsors/partners

At the end of the meeting, you will also have the chance to join a tour of the European XFEL Campus. If you intend to participate, please indicate so during registration. Note that you will need to get to the XFEL facilities by public transport as it is a bit outside the main DESY campus.

The registration fee of 60 € includes the tours and experiments at DESY, coffee breaks as well as lunch and BBQ on Thursday.

Registration has been re-opened until 10.09.23.

Please note that the program is preliminary and still subject to changes.

        DESY, Hamburg

        Notkestrasse 85, 22607 Hamburg

The PETRA III P05 beamline is dedicated to full-field x-ray tomography. The microtomography setup of P05 offers 3D scans of samples of up ~12mm size with 1-2 µm spatial resolution. Within the practical you will gain a detailed insight into how data is taken and subsequently processed.

Speaker: Dr Fabian Wilde (Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht)

        DESY, Hamburg

        Notkestrasse 85, 22607 Hamburg

Beamline P11 is dedicated to diffraction experiments of biological macromolecules and designed to provide a stable yet flexible setup. During the practical, you will perform an MX experiment with a protein standard (such as lysozyme or insulin) in cryo conditions. You will learn aobut the concepts and instruments of the beamline as well as the data processing and structure solution.
Ifyou want to participate and have particular wishes, you are welcome to get in contact with the staff at P11: p11beamline@desy.de.
This experiment requires additional safety trainings: liquid nitrogen and chemistry lab!

The practical session at beamline P21.1 will use high energy x-rays to obtain diffraction and total scattering patterns from various samples. The data will be processed to obtain the pair distribution function. The different information content of diffraction and total scattering data will be illustrated.

X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) is a powerful method for the investigation of samples from different scientific disciplines. The spectra provide information on the oxidation state, local symmetry, and coordination number and distance of neighbouring atoms. An additional advantage of the method is that crystalline samples, especially large, single-crystals are not required, and that the method works equally well for crystalline or amorphous samples, or in solutions. We will do a few experiments at the XAS beamline P64 in order to study the different benefits (and limitations) of the method.

        Speaker: Wolfgang Caliebe (FS-PETRA-S (FS-PET-S Fachgruppe P64(AdvancedX-Ray)))

Extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS) is an analytical method that yields information about the near range order around an absorber atom. We will measure EXAFS spectra of anatase and rutile, two crystal modifications of TiO2 and of CrO2 which adopts the rutile structure at beamline P65, DESY’s bulk EXAFS beamline. The three spectra nicely demonstrate, which structural information can be gained from EXAFS spectra and which limitations the method has.

      Tour XFEL: (optional) XFEL-Campus

      XFEL-Campus

European X-Ray Free Electron Laser Facility GmbH Holzkoppel 4 22869 Schenefeld

The 3.4 km long European XFEL generates extremely intense X-ray flashes used by researchers from all over the world. The flashes are produced in underground tunnels and allow scientists to map atomic details of viruses, film chemical reactions, and study processes in the interior of planets.

You can reach the campus by public transport:
Start at Luruper Chaussee (DESY), with line 2 (Schenefeld, Aken; every 20 min) to Schenefeld Aken. Duration from DESY to XFEL 30 min.
