Description

Since their first discovery in 2015, gravitational-wave observations by LIGO and Virgo yielded several surprises. Two outstanding mysteries are the detections of black holes in two mass ranges, called the upper mass gap and lower mass gap, in which stellar evolution is not expected to produce compact objects. I will discuss the accumulated observational clues that point to the origins of these surprising detections.
