Description

The DMA ST1 seminar series features topics and tools around the full data lifecycle of the DMA communities.

The DMA ST1 seminar usually consists of a ~30 minute presentation, followed by a Q&A discussion session.

Attendance is open to all interested participants.

This instance of the seminar will feature two presentations on Scientific Data Management tools: SciCat and SampleDB, by Florian Rhiem (FZ Juelich) and Moritz Hannemann (FZ Juelich).

Abstract:

SciCat is a server based metadata database with an inherent schema, conceptualised for scientific data, including relations between samples, data files, datasets, proposals and publications. It allows for fast ingestion, either directly via api or via message brokers like Kafka or RabbitMQ, searching, as well as publishing results. User and group security settings allow for sharing your data only with the right users, or to make it publicly visible.

SampleDB is a web-based electronic lab notebook and metadata database, with a powerful schema system to allow users to define exactly what metadata should be stored for each process. It can be used to track samples, measurements and other objects across their complete lifecycles and by using its web API, its interface to other SampleDB instances or exports to other ELNs, users can share all this information with other services as well.

In this talk, we introduce the two services and their core concepts and features.
