Description

Welcome to the first ACHIP+ workshop at Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY in Hamburg, Germany on March 18th and 19th 2024. This workshop is in continuation of the Accelerator on a Chip International Program (ACHIP) which was funded by Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation (www.achip.stanford.edu). 

We aim to continue and expand the international collaboration in research on laser-illuminated dielectric micro-structures as charged particle accelerators, diagnostic devices and photon sources.

        DLA-PINEM physics and efficient acceleration 30m

        PINEM, the exchange of photons with a given electron, could be regarded as the fundamental effect governing DLA in the quantum regime. Understanding PINEM physics is an excellent approach to thinking about more efficient DLA structures. I will discuss the link between PINEM and DLA in detail, towards higher-gradient acceleration

        ML-based control and optimization of DLA experiments 30m

        The experimental complexity of DLA experiments increases with increasing structure length and the utilization of more complex laser pulse shapes, such as pulse front tilts. Consequently, the experiments involve many parameters demanding careful control and optimization. Previous studies have demonstrated the efficacy of machine learning (ML) in enhancing the performance of conventional accelerators. In this presentation, I will introduce our research project funded by the BMBF, which aims to implement a machine learning-based control system. This system is designed to reconstruct, analyze and optimize the laser pulse shape used for DLA experiments at ARES, leveraging electron beam diagnostics after the DLA interaction.

        Sub-relativistic Alternating Phase Focusing Dielectric Laser Accelerators 30m

        We present our results for the design, fabrication, and testing of silicon-based, sub-relativistic Dielectric Laser Accelerators (DLAs) which use optical near fields to accelerate and confine electrons over extended distances. We describe how Alternating Phase Focusing (APF) lattices are incorporated to longitudinally/transversely focus/defocus electrons in an alternating fashion based on electron-laser interaction phase. Alternating between ±60° off-crest synchronous phases enables us to operate at half the peak acceleration gradient while also imparting strong confinement forces, ultimately extending interaction lengths up to 708 μm and achieving energy gains up to 23.7 ± 1.07 keV FWHM. We also highlight future directions for three-dimensional confinement, bunching, and quantum behavior of electrons in DLAs.

        Extended Interaction Length Laser-Driven Acceleration in a Tunable Dielectric Structure 30m

        The development of long, tunable structures is critical to increasing energy gain in laser-driven dielectric accelerators (DLAs). Here we combine pulse-front-tilt illumination with slab-geometry structures assembled by precisely aligning off-the-shelf 4~mm long transmission gratings to achieve up to 200 keV energy modulation for 6 MeV injected electrons. The effective interaction length is longer than 1~mm, limited by dephasing of the accelerated particles in the structure. The piezo-based independent mounting system for the gratings allows tuning of the gap and field distribution inside the structure.

        In the first part of the talk I will briefly review the literature on Smith–Purcell Free Electron Lasers, and speculate about the possibility of scaling down a radio wave amplifier: coupled-cavity Travelling Wave Tube, to obtain a light-generating device based on nanostructures. In the second part of the talk I will show concrete numerical results on Cherenkov Diffraction Radiation: the Fabry–Perot effect for the evanescent wave, and the anti-reflection layer for the evanescent wave.
