Strong-Field QED Workshop 2024

Europe/Berlin
CSSB Auditorium (DESY Hamburg)

CSSB Auditorium

Description

Do you consider yourself an SFQED connoisseur? Is the art of calculating non-perturbative QED something you do in your dreams? Does the thought of virtual particle-antiparticle pairs give you real excitement? Or do words like 'quantised radiation field' or 'vacuum birefringence' put you on the (Compton) edge? The concept of non-perturbativity perturbing your sleep at night? Not to worry! This workshop is for all of you.

The workshop will be organised into four 1.5-hour sessions. The first session will introduce fundamental concepts in SFQED, including the need for a non-perturbative theory and the notions of non-perturbativity and non-linearity. The second session will focus on key SFQED effects, such as the Compton edge and pair production. The third session will cover the environments and experiments where SFQED phenomena are observed. The final session will address simulations and approximations, exploring both the theoretical and numerical models used, as well as their limitations.

The sessions will take place in the mornings, each led by an expert who will guide the discussions.

  1. Introduction: Ben King
  2. Concepts: Anton Ilderton
  3. Phenomenology: Daniel Seipt
  4. Simulations: Tom Blackburn

The format will emphasise short, engaging introductions, followed by an immediate discussion of the concepts. Afternoons will provide time for further discussion and collaboration among participants.

On the first day, an evening poster session will allow participants to present their SFQED-related research, providing both a platform for academic exchange and an opportunity for social interaction. Existing posters can be reused for this session.

On the second evening, we will organize a dinner and social event for those interested in joining.

This workshop is organized by DESY in cooperation with Prof. Beate Heinemann and Prof. Gudrid Moortgat-Pick from UHH. We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of FTX and the PIER Workshop Funding.
