Career Paths & Decision-Making in Academia, Dr Insa Flachsbarth

With countless opportunities today for academics in positions, projects, collaborations at home or abroad, etc., academics are faced with difficult but far-reaching decisions regarding career paths that can overwhelm them. In this online lecture, Neela will show which strategies and useful tools can be used in the challenging decision-making process to move forward on your own career path.

Dr Insa Flachsbarth studied business administration and worked in the finance industry for several years before she transitioned into academia. She holds a PhD in agricultural and development economics and has over a decade of experience as a researcher and scientific project manager in several European and American research institutions and universities. She is also an ICF-certified coach and trainer. Her coaching and trainings focus on (self-)leadership in science as well as inter- and transdisciplinary group processes. Her workshops and coachings are designed to create long-lasting transformative experiences leaving the participants with confidence to create authentic and joyful (work) lives.

Get your CV checked in an an individual online sessions (45 minutes each) at 11:15, 12:15, 13:15, 14:15, 15:15, 16:15, or 17:15. 

Trainer/coaches:

Starting on the topic of social management, Ms Meyer-Waeterling is a systemic coach, career and outplacement consultant and systemic business trainer at HR plus. As a long-time executive in an international trading company and self-employed consultant, she developed into an expert for professional change. Her focus is on professional development and career changes. She has further training in constellation work and for hypnocommunication.

Meike Schoon is a qualified psychologist, HR specialist and expert in career orientation and development. After 15 years of professional experience in specialist and management positions in the private sector, she now supports people with career changes as an independent consultant and coach. From her own skills profile to active job searches, the creation of successful application documents and a “CV check” through to preparation for job interviews.


 

CAREER COACHINGS, 11:15 - 17:30 (online)

A one hour 1:1 coaching session is a great way to work through a particular career issue you are having. Perfect if you are preparing for a job interview, have a clear career development area you want support with, if you would like to work on your networking skills, assess your career goals, identify any obstacles holding you back, or develop a personalised action plan to help you achieve your career goals.

Trainer/coaches:

Dr Alexandra Franzke

Dr Alexandra Franzke is a systemic coach and change manager (DBVC recognized) and works freelance as a trainer and coach for career planning and third-party issues. She coordinates the nationwide Postdoc Support Network, which focuses on the qualification and improvement of research conditions for postdocs (R2/R3) in Germany. She serves as the Executive Head of SICSS at the University of Hamburg, where she also supports career and research development aspects of postdocs.

Previously, at TU Dortmund University, she established the university-wide graduate center for early career researchers’ qualification activities, where she provided career coaching and organized training and networking events for postdocs and junior professors. She also worked for over five years at the University of Freiburg as a science manager, specializing in research funding and career advising for postdocs and junior professors. She completed her doctorate in evolutionary biology at Bielefeld University and conducted a postdoc in Ecuador and Bielefeld.

Dr Steffi Beckhaus

Decision-making in regard to your career is often combined with diverse, often complex academic and personal challenges. This often results in questions about time planning, communication, motivation, stress management, leadership and career, for example. This is where personal coaching can provide helpful reflection, sorting and impetus and give you the space to develop new perspectives and your own solutions. The coaching sessions are of one hour each. The language is English or German. The coaching will take place online via Zoom.

Dr Steffi Beckhaus a former professor of computing science and freelance coach. Currently, she is working as a coach for academics (PhDs, PostDocs, Professors), entrepreneurs, and individuals, as career coach and trainer, out-of-the-box innovation trainer and coach, design thinker, ideator, organizational developer and coach for NGOs and academic environments, and is EU expert for research projects in the interplay of people and technology.

Rob Thomson

With an academic degree, a wide range of professional options are available. In the coaching, you will get support to clarify your personal perspectives: Where am I now? What do I want to do? Where do I want to go? Identify your interpersonal skills and which are needed to reach your goal. Hear about alternative ways of finding a job, and get advice in networking of an expert. Coaching sessions are of one hour each and in English. If possible, please send your CV in advance to cui.career@uni-hamburg.de.

Rob Thompson has worked both in industry and with research scientists. He has nearly 20 years of experience helping groups and individuals to improve their interpersonal relationships and advance their careers. By combining his extensive knowledge of people-management with his experience of training and leading groups, Rob gives workshops to help scientists optimise their working relationships, improve their skills and helps to unlock their potential.

Have you earned your doctorate (or are close to earning it) and now wish to pursue an academic career? Dr Nora Glaubrecht und Binne Sörine Krüger advise you on specific external funding programs from various institutions. If you wish to apply for a 30 minutes’ personal advising session, please send your CV and a short letter of motivation (4-5 sentences) stating what kind of application you are thinking of and how you see your future.

Trainer/coaches: 
Dr Nora Glaubrecht works as research manager and deputy team leader at the University of Hamburg with focus on postdoctoral funding. Before, she worked as senior project coordinator and within PhD mentoring. After gaining international research experience as evolutionary and developmental biologist, she’s been strengthening personal career development since the end of 2019.
