Hamburg has a well developed public transport system of busses, subways (U-Bahn) and suburban trains (S-Bahn). Please note that cash is not accepeted any more on busses to buy a ticket. You can buy pre-paid transportation cards at many places around the city, including many of the small service shops you find in train stations and major bus stations, at many super markets and at drug stores. They easiest way however is to get the local transportation app (hvv app, available for android phones and i-phones) and buy your ticket online.
In the central parts of the city - which includes DESY - you can rent electric scooters to get around easily from a number of different companies. In addition you may use the "city bike" system of which several stations are on the DESY campus.
