Description
The process of electron-positron pair production in rapidly time-dependent and linearly polarized electric fields is investigated within the quantum kinetic formalism. Similarities between atomic ionization and pair production are pointed out for field parameters where the Schwinger effect (tunneling) is contributing but subdominant against multi-photon absorption (above-threshold ionization). The non-monotonic dependence of the particle yield on the carrier
frequency will be discussed as well.
