Public Transportation in Hamburg

A single ticket from the airport or the main train stations should be 3,10 € ("Grossbereich"). Ticket machines are located on all train stations and accept cash, debit cards, and credit cards. You can also pay the bus driver (they have change for small bills).
Coming by Train
Flying from the US, United has a direct connection to Hamburg (HAM) from New York Newark (EWR). Otherwise, most major European hubs (e.g. Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London, Munich, Paris) have frequent connections to Hamburg.
Accomodation
DESY Hostel
The students are accomodated at the DESY hostel located on the DESY campus. The costs for 6-16 July are included in the registration fee.
Please consult the DESY Hostel webpage for the Hostel Check In and Out times etc. The Hostel key can be collected at the DESY main gatehouse (Entrance Notkestrasse) any time after 2:00 pm.
The Mercure Hotel am Volkspark at Albert Einstein Ring 2, 22671 Hamburg, is located just 3 minutes walk away from DESY Entrance Luruper Chaussee or 10 minutes walk from the DESY Main Entry Notkestrasse. Please find the details at the Hotel Website.

Coming by Train
- From Hamburg Altona station (or Hamburg main station) take the S-Bahn (local train) line S1 or S11 (direction Blankenese/Wedel) to Othmarschen station.
- At Othmarschen exit the station toward the back of the train. Take the metro bus line M1 (all directions except Altona) to the main entrance of DESY (bus stop Zum Hünengrab/DESY).

- You can also take a taxi from the airport. Travel time is approx. 40+/-10 min. Cost is about 35 €.
- For going from the airport or railway station to DESY, you need a single ticket for the Greater Hamburg Area "Grossbereich", the price is 3,20 Euro. This ticket is valid for all kinds of public transport. You can buy the ticket at a ticket machine or from the bus driver. With the single tickets you get on, change lines, get off - and back on again. Anything goes as long as it is on the most direct route to your destination. Round trips and return journeys are not permitted, however.

To reach the hotel, please follow the instructions above for reaching DESY. If you are using public transport, you have to leave the Metrobus 1 at the station Bahrenfelder Trabrennbahn, the hotel is 3 min walking distance in dection DESY Luruper Chaussee. Please note that the breakfast is included.
