Summary of LUXE monthly meeting (01 Feb 2018)
present: R. Brinkmann, F. Burkart, A. Hartin, B. Heinemann, A. Levy, J. List, E.Negodin, N. Tapiaa, M. Wing
- Beate and Matthew gave brief talks as introduction:
- Beate mentioned that the August workshop planning is now progressing well. The indico page is here: https://indico.desy.de/indico/event/19493/overview. It should be finalised by the end of this week and then registration can open. Matthew is chairing the scientific programme committee and discussed the membership and the plan.
- Beate mentioned the postdoc ad is out. Please, advertise it to suitable candidates or people who might know suitable candidates.
- Beate also proposed dates for the next-to-next meeting but as both seemed viable to those present a doodle poll will be launched to settle it.
- Beate also discussed funding options, e.g. DFG and ERC. Aharon mentioned that the German-Israeli fund might also be an option
- Evgeni discussed the open questions related to the machine:
- Location: Evgeni reminded us of the location we are considering within the XFEL tunnel, after the undulators and before the last undulator and before the dump in the XYTD5 tunnel. There are about 100m of space we can use amd there is an access shaft at the dump we can use to guide the laser light down. Evgeni showed several drawings, also the power lines etc.
- Crane: during the discussion and remarks by Reinhard we concluded that we must not guide the laser through the crane path. It may be needed in an emergency and thus it is highly unlikely we would be allowed to block the path. The question is if we can guide the laser either above the crane or have a separate small shaft at a location where there is no crane. Or, if we can indeed guide the laser light through the tunnel from the experimental halls.
- He also showed the drawing of the tunnel to understand how much transverse space we can use. Using a 3D model he has this can be estimated in detail.
- He also mentioned that there is a webpage which shows all magnets available at DESY. There is a large variety. We need to find out what we need and then see if suitable ones exist.
- Regarding the beam quality questions, Winnie is the expert. Once we know exactly where we want to put the experiment we can get the answers from him.
- Tony made a lot of progress on the theory calculation of the compton and the trident processes and presented the results. He wrote a MC generator to implement the processes and can now provide event files and spectra of photon and electron energies as well as event rates. He will provide event files for some parameters sets we can then use to start optimize the experiment.
- AOB: next meeting is on March 1st in Sem. Rm. 1
