OVERALL OBJECTIVES

Learn tips to overcome stress and nerves, use effective body language and gestures, project your voice, practice breath control, increase awareness of how you come across as a speaker, gain confidence when speaking, deal with imposter syndrome

 

COMMON FEARS

  • Is public speaking worse than death? (PP)
  • Spontaneous speaking exercise (index cards)
  • Brainstorm fears/weaknesses with partner
  • Imposter syndrome: understanding fear, moving forward

 

VOICE 1

  • Calming nerves with breath control

  • Waking up the voice warmup
  • V.O.I.C.E./6 tips to keep in mind
  • Vocal exercises: speed, variety, projection
  • Recording session with peer evaluation
  • Tips to protect your voice at a conference

GESTURES & SPATIAL AWARENESS

  • Physical warm up and grounding
  • Grim and gorgeous gestures
  • Use of space/room/technical issues
  • Eye contact and focus
  • Quick practice (cards from a hat)

  • 2-minute prepared talks plus group feedback

ONLINE TRAINING TIPS

  • Technical issues: platform, tools (mic, speaker), time
  • Online technique: talking in turns, sharing docs, using a mix of visuals, voice, and facial expression to communicate
  • Voice articulation, pacing, clarity

Trainer
Elena Kaufman is the founder of Creative Communications EK where she trains academics in the soft skills of presentations,  job talks, and interviews. She also runs a weekly improv theatre course for scientists and is a trained stage actor and director.
