Starting point:
Whether young scientists are aiming to pursue a career in science, plan a change in career and look for a position in science administration or in the private industry - it is likely that they will assume a leadership role. In a research environment scientists learn about technical skills and knowledge, but to lead a group it takes people skills – skills that are equally important for lateral leadership and in preparation of a formal leadership position.
Workshop content:
The participants of this workshop will analyse the tasks involved in leadership and management inside and outside science. They will get to know major leadership principles and different leadership styles and realize how attitudes, behaviour and communication patterns influence the cooperation with others. Reflecting on their own role and experiences in the collaboration with technical staff, master students or research assistants the participants will realize what skill set they need to obtain in order to take on a leadership role in an academic or non-academic context. Following a theoretical introduction with exercises, the participants will have the opportunity to discuss specific cases from their own experience and understand the differences in leading teams with or without formal authority.
Workshop objectives:
- Know tasks and tools involved in a leadership role
- Know major HR tools (delegation, goal-setting, feedback, dealing with low motivation) and know how to apply them in the supervision of bachelor and master students
- Reflect on own leadership role, understand own attitudes and behavior and their impact on work and communication with others
- Get a first insight into the mechanisms of lateral leadership

Dr. Kristina Böhlke is organization consultant, trainer and coach. She earned a doctorate in Biology and worked for many years as a science manager and leader in the public sector before becoming self-employed. Her insights from various perspectives – as a scientist and in science administration on national, federal and EU level as well as manager in change processes – characterize her seminars for businesses and non-profit organizations. She backed up her practical experience in further education courses in management and leadership techniques and with a qualification as communication trainer from which participants benefit directly as they develop new approaches to solve difficult situations. Kristina Böhlke enjoys in particular working with people who want to grow into new “worlds“ and (professional) roles.
This event is organized through the PIER Education Platform.
