Workshops

Workshops take place on Saturday between 11:00-13:00. There will be TWO workshop slots, so you can learn something about different topics.

To allocate participants evenly choose THREE different workshops, you would be interested in, for the TWO sessions available. Please note that the biosecurity workshop takes the whole two hours. If too many people are interested in a single workshop, participants will be prioritized based on affiliation (so every team gets the chance to send someone to a workshop).

You can sign up to the workshops via the following form: https://forms.gle/E97Ee4dbfNfR3Ucw7

Ideation workshop - Vasiliki Kawatha, iGEM Entrepreneurship Program and Innovation Community (EPIC)

Use the Double Diamond as a design thinking framework that will guide you from an idea to a real, valuable solution that will benefit the end-user. We will investigate the different aspects of your ideas and try to redefine them by a process going from Discover, Define, Develop and Deliver. The end goal is to come up with your final Unique Value Proposition that will convince every investor, customer, or iGEM Judge that your project has a real impact.

Next-Level Biosecurity: How to not Accidentally Build a Bioweapon - Svenja Vinke and Irina Rais, iGEM Safety and Security Committee

Why should we concern ourselves with biosecurity beyond the safety form?

You designed an iGEM project that is supposed to make the world a better place, but have you ever thought about that someone else could misuse your research findings to cause harm? We call that "dual-use potential" of research. Many life sciences students graduate without ever learning the term "dual-use". In this interactive workshop, led by iGEM alumni, you will learn how to evaluate dual-use research and bring your biosecurity considerations to the next level.

Be ready to get to know your iGEM peers. We will work in groups on iGEM projects from the past that have dual-use potential, and you will learn how to design your project responsibly.

About the workshop hosts: Irina, Levin, Matthias and Svenja are all iGEM alumni from Bielefeld who now work on their own SynBio projects in Cologne, Bielefeld, Boston and in the biosecurity world. Together we share more than 10 years of iGEM experience as team members, supervisors, judges, and members of the Safety and Security Committee. Feel free to contact us!

Pitch Perfect: How to Make the Perfect Elevator Pitch - Leon Werner, GASB

Learn from experts how to explain your iGEM project to possible sponsors and judges without getting lost in technical jargon!

DESY Tour: See the insides of a particle accelerator - Bjarne Klopprogge, DESY (CFEL)

DESY is one of the world’s leading accelerator centres. Researchers use the large-scale facilities at DESY to explore the microcosm in all its variety - from the interactions of tiny elementary particles and the behaviour of new types of nanomaterials to biomolecular processes that are essential to life. The accelerators and detectors that DESY develops and builds are unique research tools. The facilities generate the world’s most intense X-ray light, accelerate particles to record energies and open completely new windows onto the universe.

Take a look inside the experimental halls of the particle accelerators with Bjarne, a former iGEMer and advisor for the team Hamburg. Find out how we image biomolecules and take a look at some of the biggest machines build for science.

How Would Human Practices Help Prefect Your Project - Dorothy Zhang, iGEM HQ

Yoga with Amelie: Clear Your Head and Refresh During an Eventful Weekend - Amelie Geuer, iGEM Hamburg

During a meetup you receive a lot of input. Therefore it is equally important to take a step back and have some time to relax. Join this session and enjoy an informal atmosphere!

Amelie is a professional yoga instructor, studying Molecular Life Sciences and part of our iGEM team.

Breath for Success: Enhance your public speaking performance using simple breathing techniques - Esther Lange, iGEM Hamburg

The art of public speaking is widely discussed but even though matters like storytelling or engagement are very important, most people miss out on the most fundamental part: The breath. Are you ready to find out how to increase your impact and learn how to show up during public speaking, using your breath as your most powerful tool?

Esther is a master student at the University of Hamburg, studying Molecular Life Sciences. In the past she has given numerous talks and applied these techniques to improve her public speaking.
