The PIER Graduate Week is an interdisciplinary lecture and workshop week for young scientists. This year, it offers two stimulating block courses with topics that are of interest for many doctoral candidates in the wide range of the PIER research fields of Particle & Astroparticle Physics, Nanoscience, Photon Science and Infection & Structural Biology. It aims at PhD students, but MSc students, postdoctoral researchers and other interested scientists are also invited to join in.

Each course is a four-day series of eight consecutive mini lectures (16-19 October). The first thematic bloc covers the field of advanced scientific computing and machine learning in physics. The second thematic bloc is on the physics of the life sciences and the connections of fundamental physics to modern biology and medicine. Complementary soft skill courses take place on 20 + 23 October.

The graduate week's main objective is to give young scientists on Bahrenfeld campus the opportunity to broaden their interdisciplinary understanding and interchange with their colleagues from other research fields.

Extras:

  • Industry talk on "Flight physics at AIRBUS" with DESY alumnae Dr. Jasone Garay Garcia

  • Scientific colloquium on "Artificial intelligence in neurointensive medical
care" with Dr. Nils Schweingruber, Universitätsklinikum Eppendorf, Hamburg

  • The complementary soft skills workshops combine short lectures with practical exercises and homework. Please note: The places for the soft skills workshops are limited. and take place after the scientific lectures on 20 and 23 October 2023.

  • Poster session: PhD students from all PIER research fields are invited to present a poster on 18 October. The best poster will be awarded a prize.
