Travel to Heidelberg
By plane:
Frankfurt Airport
- If travelling by plane, the nearest airport is Frankfurt(FRA). It is Germany's biggest international airport, about 100km from Heidelberg. You can take the Lufthansa Airport Shuttle or book a direct high-speed train (ICE) connection between Frankfurt Airport and Mannheim, followed by a regional train to Heidelberg. In both cases, it takes about 60 min.
Stuttgart Airport
- The Stuttgart Airport is also quite near, with many connections to Heidelberg. From there, it takes about 90 minutes by train to Heidelberg.
Other low-budget Airports
- Low-budget airlines serve Frankfurt-Hahn and Baden-Airpark. From both airports, Heidelberg is easy to reach by regular coach services.
By Train to Heidelberg main station (Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof)
- Heidelberg is located about 90km South of Frankfurt, 20km East of Mannheim and easily reachable by train TravelService of the Deutsche Bahn AG
- You can purchase train tickets to Heidelberg either directly at the counter or on the Deutsche Bahn Website or using their apps for Android and ios. By Public Transport to the Institute
If you arrive by train, your ticket might indicate "Heidelberg+City", which allows to travel from the main station to your final destination using any public transport. In In general, public transport tickets can be purchased at the vending machines (for trams) or by the bus driver (for busses, in cash). - The best way to reach the institute is to take a tram to Bunsengynasium and walk for four minutes. At the main station (northern exit) buy a single journey City-Tarif Heidelberg ticket (~2,30 Euro) and take tram line 21 or tram line 24 (in the direction of Handschusheim/Hans Thoma Platz) and get off at the tram stop called Bunsengymansium.
- When you leave the tram, you are standing in front of a gas station. Walk in the opposite direction towards the Neuenheimer Feld until you see a second large black building on the left side. Look for the number 226 on the top front of the building, which is the Physikalisches Institut.
- You can also take bus number 20 (direction Neunheim Sportszentrum Nord) or 32 (direction Neunheim, Kirchenstraße) and either get down at Neunheim Campus and walk for around 7 mins to the institute.

By Foot to the Institute:
You can also walk to the Physikalisches Institut on foot for about 2km which should take around 20-30 mins.
By Car:
- Take the autobahn A5 coming from north or south until Kreuz Heidelberg.
- There, exit direction Heidelberg (A656).
- Go straight until the end of the Autobahn.
- Turn left and follow B37 direction Eberbach.
- On B37, after the bridge, turn right in the Vangerowstraße (B37).
- Turn right to the L600A (Jahnstraße).
- Go straight ahead along the Neckar bridge, ahead on the Berliner Straße.
- Turn left at the second traffic light, to the street "Im Neuenheimer Feld".
- Try to find a parking lot (Parking in the Neuenheimer Feld is only allowed with a parking ticket (parking license). In front of our adjoining building (INF 227a) are some parking places for visitors.)
