Hamburg has a good public transport system. You can purchase tickets at ticket machines or online. Tickets are not sold in busses or trains. For online tickets and routes, you can download the HVV app for Android or iOS or use the web interface.
For most rides (e.g. from the airport or trainstation to DESY) you will need the 1-2 fare rings ticket.

Getting to DESY
From the airport take train S1 to either Holstenstraße and bus 3 or the faster X3 to Luruper Chausse (DESY) or S1 to Ottensen an bus 2 to Luruper Chausse (DESY). The ride time is approximately one hour. Travelling by taxi will get you here in half an hour depending on the traffic and will cost around 40€.
From the trainstation take S1 or S5 Holstenstraße and Bus 3 or the faster X3 to Luruper Chausee (DESY). Most trains also continue to Hamburg Altona or Ottensen. In this case, take Bus 2 from Altona/Ottensen to Luruper Chausee (DESY).
