Workshop 5: Preparation of the PhD defense

Bahrenfeld Campus/DESY, building 1, room Sem01

Goal:
The PhD students learn to present their research in a convincing and memorable way during the PhD defense. They review their talk from different perspectives and give constructive feedback to their peers. We focus on a confident and competent presentation style where the presenter stays in contact with the audience during the talk and deals with questions in a coherent way.

Content:
Selecting the content of the talk:
• Setting the goal and the focus of the presentation
• Analyzing the expectations of the examination board members.
• Explaining complex ideas in an understandable way.

Preparing the slides:
• Applying graphical design to scientific slides.
• Producing clear figures with adequate level of details.
• Creating an exciting beginning and ending of the talk.

Performance:
• Improving speaking skills and body language.
• Interacting with the audience during the talk.
• Preparing for and dealing with questions and remarks.

Methods:
Presentations by the trainer. Role plays train the interaction with the audience, and methods from improvisational theater increase enthusiasm, flexibility, and presence. A short talk by each participant is recorded showing areas with potential for improvement. A handout containing checklists for the preparation of the defense is provided.

Format: 1 training day (à 8h, including breaks) with max. 12 participants.

Language: German or English.

Trainer:
Dr. Ben Brüggemann is coach and trainer for natural scientists. As a scientist himself, he participated in about twenty international conferences with talks and posters. Furthermore, he gave several lectures from mathematics to quantum physics and had a teaching assignment for a specialized lecture course. He obtained his PhD in physics at Humboldt-University Berlin, and worked as PostDoc in Lund (Sweden) and Berlin. One of his main interests is improvisation theater and its application for scientists.
