Negotiating Professionally in Academia
Professionalisation in the areas of communication and negotiations is becoming more and more important for academics pursuing leadership positions or professorships: research processes are increasingly characterised by internationalisation and by the need to be able to cooperate within complex structures. It is thus essential to be able to communicate with very different target groups which may have equally divergent interests. Good communication can minimise losses due to personal frictions and avoid unnecessary strain while promoting good results.
Another important skill is the ability to conduct constructive negotiations: simply asserting one's own ideas and interests is seldom an option the everyday world of academia. Instead, negotiating skills are called for whenever resources are distributed, proposals are submitted, goals are negotiated and defined, or projects are developed. This training is designed to set impulses which will lead to further learning and experimentation in everyday academic life. Unlike courses that concentrate primarily on relating expert knowledge, this training is not just about cognitively processing new information: it also guides the participants as they confront their own personality and look for ways to shape their relationship to other actors in the academic field. In this context, participants will be encouraged to reflect on their own behaviour and to practice and experiment – e.g. in the form of role plays – in order to broaden their range of possible behaviours.
