Proposal Preparation Guidelines

General Information

Templates for the PETRA IV Scientific Instrumentation Proposals can be found on the overview page. There are two templates for the proposal (Part 1 and Part 2). See more information below. Both parts of the proposal have to be submitted! The proposal language is English. The design of tables and figures can be freely chosen.Please stick to the restrictions of content, space, number of words and number of figures. The maximum length of the proposal (part 2) is 3.5 A4 pages incl. figures and tables. The literature references are excluded from the length restrictions. You can upload both parts of the proposal at the end of the submit proposal page using the field "Attached Files". Please upload both parts of the proposal as a PDF file not as a WORD file.

You have the possibility to modify your proposal after submission until the official deadline of the PETRA IV Scientific Instrumentation Proposal Submission!

Please note that the PETRA IV project team may reject proposals that do not comply with the guidelines!

Your Scientific Instrumentation proposals are the basis of the future PETRA IV beamline portfolio.

With the submission of the scientific instrumentation proposal, I understand that my personal data (name, e-mail, affiliation, institution) provided in the proposal form and entered in the data fields of the section “Submit Proposal” is stored and processed for the development of the PETRA IV beamline portfolio. DESY will use the data only to stay in contact with you and to develop the PETRA IV Technical Design Report. PETRA IV Scientific Instrumentation Proposal

The PETRA IV Scientific Instrumentation Proposal consists of two parts. The first part contains information about the speaker of the proposal, co-proposer, abstract, and a list of required X-ray beam and experiment specifications. The list of specifications will be used by the PETRA IV project team to compare all submitted proposals in terms of parameters. The second part is the main proposal part and consists of the sections I. Science case, II. Experiment Description, and III. Explanation of the use of PETRA IV Parameters.

The font and the font size of the header of the sections should remain as shown in the proposal template. The font of the main texts is Arial with a font size of 10,5. The text has a single line spacing and full justification.

I. Science case

The maximum length of this section is 1 A4 page incl. figures and tables. Please include not more than 2 figures with caption. This section should contain information about motivation, scientific background, results expected and their scientific impact and a novelty statement.

II. Experiment Description

The maximum length of this section is 2 A4 pages incl. figures and tables. Please include not more than 2 figures with caption. This section should contain detailed information about the experimental setup, sample environment, detector, data acquisition, and required computing and IT. Please be as detailed as possible.

III. Explanation of the use of PETRA IV Parameters.

This section should have a total number of ~200 words (not more than 0.5 A4 page). The section should contain information about the importance to need the unique parameters of PETRA IV for the experiment/instrument. Keywords could be nm-focus size, higher photon flux, higher energy resolution, or faster data acquisition. A higher throughput may also be used as explanation or argument.
