Abstract:

Modern experimental particle physics is stymied by the limits of possible acceleration that conventional particle accelerators can provide. Scientists desperately need new, more powerful acceleration tools. A plasma wakefield accelerator could be such a tool. It has accelerating gradients orders of magnitude larger than those of conventional accelerators. The most impressive experimental results until now in electron accelerating by a wakefield, excited in a plasma, have been achieved using capillary-generated plasma. Plasma-wakefield acceleration provides high accelerating gradients, promises compact accelerators of high-brightness and high-energy electron beams. Applications of plasma-wakefield accelerators, in particular, particle colliders and free-electron lasers demand low energy spread beams, their small emittance, high current of accelerated bunches, large transformer ratio and high-efficiency operation. Achievement of these requires plateau formation on both the accelerating fields for witness-bunches and the decelerating fields for driver-bunches. As it is known plateau formation is possible by controlled beam loading with careful shaping current profile and beam charge selection. Such optimal beam loading will be demonstrated by numerical simulation by PIC codes in a blowout electron-driven and laser-driven plasma accelerators. Externally injected beams for electron-driven plasma accelerator are prepared with RF linear accelerator with high beam quality. Laser-driven plasma accelerators are considered with self-injection of electron bunches. Systems with a large transformer ratio, taking into account high efficiency, identical plateaus for driver-bunches, and other identical plateaus for witness-bunches, the large charge of witness-bunches will be shown.

The plasma undulator is important for sources of high-energy photons. Betatron oscillations will be demonstrated by numerical simulation by PIC code in a laser-driven plasma undulator.

For accelerated bunch focusing and for synchronous radial oscillations in plasma undulator the homogeneous focusing fields are important. Formation of homogeneous focusing fields for short as well as for relatively long electron bunches will be demonstrated by numerical simulation by PIC code in a plasma.

DESY

Community proposals using seeded operation at FLASH

OrganizersM. Guehr et. al.

TimeTuesday, full day and Wednesday half-day

LocationDESY, CFEL Seminar room II-III, Bldg. 99

Typeon-site

Abstract:

FLASH is undergoing a significant upgrade with the FLASH2020+ project, resulting in an externally seeded FLASH1 free electron laser branch. The externally seeded operation at a high repetition rate, up to an effective repetition rate of 8 kHz, positions FLASH at a unique place in the international FEL landscape. The increased longitudinal coherence, spectral stability, and high average spectral flux are ideal for advanced ultrafast and nonlinear X-ray probing of matter. The upgrade will occur in 2024 and 2025. We plan to stage community-driven experiments in the time interval after commissioning, before the start of normal peer-reviewed access mode. The experiments aim to demonstrate a particular capability of the new source, which is essential for your community.

The sessions aim to assemble the communities working together on these experiments. The nature of the experiments between the commissioning and regularly reviewed proposal access requires coordination by our local scientists at DESY, with an international team contributing to the effort. We are looking for 1-2 community proposals per science area (Chemistry, Materials, AMO, Biology).

In the workshop, we will start with an introduction on the morning of Tuesday, January 23rd, followed by two parallel sessions in the morning (Chemistry, Materials) and two in the afternoon (AMO, BIO). On Wednesday, January 24th, we will have a summary and conclusion session around lunchtime.

We would be grateful if you could join this event to shape and participate in the community experiments. Every participant is invited to contribute a short (10-minute) presentation. We value your input and also encourage you to spread the news of this workshop in your community.

Opportunities for ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) experiments at DESY’s REGAE facility  Draft programme

OrganizersA. Meents

TimeTuesday, 14.00 – 18.00h

LocationDESY, FLASH Seminar room, Bldg. 28c

Typehybrid

Abstract:

REGAE is DESY’s machine for Ultrafast Electron Diffraction (UED) experiments with relativistic electrons. The combination of the high electron energy (2 – 5 MeV) in combination with ultrashort pulse durations of down to 50 fs make REGAE an ideal tool for probing structural dynamics at high q-resolution. Due to the 5-6 orders stronger interaction of high-energy electron with matter compared to X-rays UED is ideally suited for the investigation of very thin samples such a quantum- and 2D materials.

Recently, we have upgraded REGAE with a new experimental chamber, a new high precision goniometer, and a new integrating detector for highly efficient electron detection, which lead to a tremendously improved beam stability and achievable signal to-noise-ratio. These improvements allowed us, to perform first 3D structure determinations using 3 MeV electrons. In the next months we will implement a new pump laser beam transport system, a NOPA setup for generating different pump wavelengths, and a cryostat for sample cooling down to 10K. A special effort is made to provide THz radiation for sample excitation.

It is the goal of the workshop to attract potential users to REGAE, to discuss future directions, and to generate a user community. In the workshop the current experimental capabilities, first measurement results, and also sample preparation aspects will be presented. These technical presentations will be complemented by expert talks about different application fields such a quantum materials and experiments with liquids. At the end of the workshop, we plan a discussion round about future experimental directions of REGAE and to initiate collaborations for first user experiments.

In situ energy-dispersive XRD and imaging on materials in the Large Volume Press at P61B Programme

OrganizersRobert Farla & Shrikant Bhat

TimeTuesday, 13.00 – 17:30h

LocationDESY, Seminar room BAH 1+2, Bldg. 3

Typehybrid

Abstract:

The Aster-15 LVP can routinely generate high pressure (ca. 35 GPa) and temperature (ca. 3000 K) environments on samples for investigations using energy-dispersive X-ray diffraction (ED-XRD) and radiography in the high-energy range 30 – 160 KeV at the Wiggler beamline station P61B. Specialised assemblies may generate even higher pressures. The station provides two highly positional Ge-detectors for XRD acquisition at user-defined pre-calibrated diffraction angles (3° < 2θ < 10°), including vertical positioning for cubic compression (3° < 2θ < 20°) with one detector. During sample deformation (p < 15 GPa), stresses from lattice microstrains can be measured with both detectors at 2θ = 5° or greater (at 0° and 90° azimuthal positions). This setup is enhanced using X-ray transparent cBN and sintered-diamond anvils. A movable beamstop is available to reduce background scattering. Furthermore, we offer additional in situ techniques, such as 1) acoustic emissions detection with 6 sensors, combined with deformation to study brittle processes in samples, and 2) ultrasonic wave speed measurements using a LiNbO3 transducer and a signal amplification system to study the physical properties of materials at pressures over 20 GPa in assemblies as small as 10 mm. Imaging experiments, such as falling sphere viscosimetry, are enhanced with an extremely bright scintillator: GAGG:Ce on the x-ray microscope (up to 1 kHz acquisitions). A suite of data processing software can be found on the beamline website. In summary, proposals can be submitted to P61B for beam time (normal access) and for time without X-rays (fast access). Details on the status, development and future of the beamline at PETRA IV will be presented at this dedicated workshop. We hope this meeting offers an opportunity for you to connect with fellow scientists in the field and with the invited speakers.

Introduction to PYDIDAS: A new tool for automated diffraction data analysis  Draft programme

OrganizersM. Storm

TimeThursday, 09.30 – 12.00h

LocationCFEL Seminar room I & II, bldg. 99

Typeon site

Abstract:

The push towards faster experiments and generally the enhanced data rates requires new efforts on the analysis side to keep processing speed up with experimental speed. Typically, in situ or in operando experiments generate huge data quantities and require fast feedback in the form of data processing during experiments to optimize experimental results of beamtimes. Historically, data reduction and pre-processing of X-ray diffraction datasets has been very much a burden to the user groups. To help existing users and attract new user groups who do not have the technical experience to perform the required processing steps, Hereon has developed the PYDIDAS software (pydidas.hereon.de) suite for X-ray diffraction data analysis. PYDIDAS is explicitly designed to allow full data analysis in a single tool, to natively process modern data container types (HDF5.) and to make efficient use of parallel computing. Data browsing and display, experiment calibration, workflow setup, processing and visualization are all available from within the software which runs both as an analysis service at our beamlines and also as a local installation. This workshop will give an introduction into PYDIDAS in the form of an assisted training on the participants' computers.
