Description

Research Exchange and Discovery Workshop on PIER research fields.

Welcome to the registration homepage of the READi Workshop 2014 at CFEL, DESY. In the navigation menu on the left you can find the registration form, the conference schedule, and information about the offered presentation skills courses.

General information:

This workshop is aimed at PhD students at DESY or UHH working in one of the PIER research fields: Particle and Astroparticle Physics, Nanosciences, Photon Science, or Infection and Structural Biology. Participants can discover the other exciting research fields at DESY/UHH and teach fellow PhD students about their own work. Especially young PhD students are encouraged to present their research to a mixed audience.

The workshop will be structured as follows: During a three-day period there will be five sessions of plenary talks, one on each of the PIER research fields and two on Particle and Astroparticle Physics (Theory & Experiment). Each session will begin with an introductory lecture by an expert of the field, held at a level accessible to the entire audience. This is followed by talks of the participants. Similarly, these presentations should not simply be a review of the speakers' latest publication, but should serve as a motivation and introduction to a specific research topic for an audience of experts as well as non-experts. This should be a challenging and instructive experience for all participants.

Apart from the plenary sessions, there will be plenty of time for discussions and exchange during coffee breaks, a reception on Monday evening, and a conference dinner on Tuesday evening. In addition, on Tuesday afternoon we will offer guided lab tours for interested participants. For more information about the conference schedule, please see the link in the navigation menu.

Presentation skills courses:

As a preparation for participants who give a talk, we offer two different complementary soft skill courses on presentation technique three weeks before the workshop. Places are limited and will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis. For more information, see the link in the navigation menu.

Conference fee:

The workshop is almost entirely funded by the Joachim Herz Stiftung. Participants are required to pay a small conference fee of 20€, which is reduced to 10€ for those who give a presentation. The fee is payable by bank transfer during registration. This fee covers the entire workshop, including coffee breaks, reception, and dinner. Please note that the number of registrants is limited to 50, and places will be distributed as equally as possible among the four PIER research fields.

Location:

The workshop and the presentation skills courses will take place at CFEL (Building 99 on Bahrenfeld Campus, DESY) in seminar rooms I and II. For directions see http://www.cfel.de/contact/.
