Description

As members of the Virgo Collaboration – co-authoring observational results together with the LIGO Scientific Collaboration and the KAGRA Collaboration – we became aware of biased citation practices that exclude Virgo (and KAGRA) from achievements that collectively belong to the wider LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA Collaboration. Here we frame these practices in the context of Merton’s “Matthew effect” applied to scientific collaborations rather than individual scientists, we quantify the occurrence of this cognitive bias, describe the positive actions that we undertook to correct it in the scientific community, and report the reactions to our efforts.
