Description

In recent years, evidence of collective effects has been observed in small collision systems at the LHC; however, its precise origin remains unknown.
In this presentation, we will discuss new measurements of anisotropic flow observables (flow harmonic coefficients, flow vector correlation and decorrelation, nonlinear flow response) in pp and p--Pb collisions with ALICE. The highlights include the measurements of flow vector decorrelation in $p_{\rm T}$ and $\eta$, and flow harmonic magnitude of identified particles in different multiplicity intervals. Non-flow contributions are significantly suppressed by the use of forward detectors, allowing a large pseudorapidity separation of the correlated particles up to $|\Delta\eta| \sim 8$. Comprehensive comparisons to model calculations provide tight constraints on the fluctuating initial conditions, allowing us to explore how anisotropic flow develops from the initial geometry through the dynamic evolution of the created system in pp and p-Pb collisions, and allow us to investigate the role of the quark-coalescence mechanism.
