Description

The new CMS MIP Timing Detector (MTD) will provide precision timing information for charged particles, with hermetic coverage up to a pseudo-rapidity of |η|=3. This upgrade will mitigate the effects of pile-up expected at the High-Luminosity LHC, while bringing new and unique capabilities to the CMS detector. The endcap regions of CMS will be instrumented with two disks of silicon devices with excellent time resolution, covering a pseudorapidity range from about 1.6 to 3.0. This Endcap Timing Layer (ETL) will utilize low-gain avalanche diode (LGAD) sensors to detect the time-of-arrival of charged particles with precision of around 30 ps. The use of timing and tracking together will give CMS excellent association of tracks to vertices even when the vertices are very close together in space, recovering the Phase-1 quality of event reconstruction. We will present an overview of the ETL design and report on the status of the developments of the full-size systems for ETL, including results with the first full-size ETROC ASIC integrated with prototype front-end electronics and data acquisition software.
