FEL based infrared ion spectroscopy: new opportunities in physical and analytical chemistry
In this tutorial, I will discuss how the tunable IR radiation from the FELIX free-electron laser is employed to obtain infrared spectra of molecular ions in various types of mass spectrometers. The IR spectra provide detailed information on the molecular structure of the species in the MS, which can usually not be obtained from the mass spectrometry data alone, and which can also not be extracted with conventional IR spectrometers. I will show examples on how this myriad of FEL-based IR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry aids in molecular identification with applications in fundamental physical chemistry as well as in analytical sciences.
