Overview and scientific perspectives of worldwide FEL facilities

In this tutorial an overview of the worldwide FEL facilities in operation or under construction is provided, highlighting the important parameters such as wavelength range, peak brilliance, repetition rate, etc. The scientific impact of high repetition rate FELs, powered by superconducting accelerators is described, on the basis of the recent results of the operating facilities. Another important parameter is the longitudinal coherence and reproducibility of the pulses, obtained by replacing the SASE radiation process by more advanced schemes based on seeding, self-seeding, echo-enhancement etc. Directions of future growth are briefly outlined.
