Femtosecond time-resolved x-ray absorption spectroscopy of solids
In this tutorial, I will discuss how x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) with femtosecond time resolution, performed at x-ray free electron lasers and synchrotron Femtoslicing sources, is able to probe optically induced ultrafast dynamics of solids. After an introduction to the basics of the method and its technical implementation at large scale facilities, I will give an overview over recent examples in which femtosecond XAS has been employed to reveal and characterize non-equilibrium states, with an emphasis on magnetically ordered and strongly correlated materials.
